The Soft Capture is a duo recently formed by Copenhagen, Denmark-based musicians and producers Andreas Wetterberg and Claus Poulsen.
Claus Poulsen is an improvising musician and producer, who has been a part of the electronic and experimental scene since 1995, when he formed the noise-ensemble Alarm112. Claus has continued with a number of projects since then, making solo performances and releases a priority in the last few years. The name of the game is free improvisation, experimentation and artistic challenge. He plays both non-instruments (amplified objects, dictaphone, turntable, bonsai tree), instruments (string instruments, keyboards, percussion) and electronics (laptop, pedals, synth).
A versatile improviser, his music projects span across genres such as ambient (solo), noise, freejazz (Blind Man’s Band) and lo-fi soundscape (Star Turbine). Claus is highly active releasing cassettes, CDs and vinyl (on labels such as Insula Jazz, Soundholes, Invisible City, Chocolate Monk, Metaphysical Circuits, Dokuro and Sonic Meditations) and tours frequently in Denmark, Scandinavia and Europe. That is, before corona!
Andreas Wetterberg is an art technologist, educator and improviser who has worked on installation and performance projects for 20+ years. He has collaborated with multiple major institutions in Denmark, and has performed in the US, Brazil, and throughout Europe. In the early 00s, Andreas saw the Danish electro-acoustic music scene as over-reliant on backtracks and shallow performances of “studio music”, and he shifted his focus to combining “traditional” electronic computer music with deep improvisational practices.
Using the software Max, Andreas writes algorithms to allow reacting in real-time to other performers, such as Claus, while also drawing on Western and world music traditions. Andreas has also worked many years with the collective Kopenhagen Laptop Orchestra, and is now using Covid-times to retool and expand his delightfully over-complicated live rig.
"Sigende" is a live improvisation with Claus on zither and Andreas liveprocessing the signal with 40 kilos of electronics. After this very succesful first recording session, the duo plans to continue along this ambient style, but will also stretch out and experiment with other genres and instrumentation.
The debut album of The Soft Capture is due to be released on DWI in spring 2021.
